SERMON NOTES

Subject: "A God of a New Covenant & a Second Chance"--Pastor Horace Dukes Jr.

Scripture: Genesis 8:1-6; 9-12; 20-22; 9:16

Within this passage of scripture lies a relationship of the Olive Branch, Altar, and the Covenant. God decided to destroy humanity because of rampant sin but Noah was granted favor because God saw him as righteous. After the the "war" of deluge, God extended a peace offering by returning the dove (a symbol of peace carried by the Holy Spirit) bearing an olive branch (an evergreen, symbolizing perpetuity). After Noah builds an altar and offers a sacrifice that is pleasing to God, a covenant of new beginnings is granted. He would make an everlasting covenant with every living creature (9:16). We must look closely at what is meant by this everlasting covenant because the Lord said "As long as the earth remained, cultivation, seasons, day and night would not cease." Therefore the everlasting covenant, which was made of flesh, would last as long as the earth and flesh remained. This raises the question--what happens when the earth ceases and the sun refuses to shine. The Old Testament symbols, were just types or a shadow of what was to come. The Old Testament covenant of flesh has been surpassed by a spiritual peace offering. Isaiah spoke of this peace offering and described Him as a tender plant in dry ground (53:2) and the root of Jesse (11:10). Jeremiah described Him as a righteous branch (23:5). This branch and peace offering was brought to us by the Dove (Holy Spirit --Matt 1:20). Once we accept this spiritual peace offering and make an altar in our heart, we become partakers of a better an eternal covenant (Heb 8:6).

Subject: "Have You Recieved A Word of Reconciliation?"--Pastor Horace Dukes Jr.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Paul makes two calls in this passage: A call to be reconciled, and having been reconciled, a second call to join in the ministry of reconciliation. It may seem odd that one has to call the church to reconciliation, i.e., to come to a place of fellowship with God. After all, shouldn't the saints already be in fellowship with Him? Since the call to reconciliation is made by Paul--God's ambassador and agent--let's look at the agency that hinders reconciliation.
1. The Secret Agent--one who has been called but lacks the faith to take the call to a higher level. Such a person has a comfort level with the body of Christ but stands in fear that those in their past life will reject their Christian confession. In Saint John 3 we find a secret agent by the name of Nicodemus--One that for fear of the "religious right" will not confess his call. Problem: God can never get glory from a secret agent. He can't use a coward soldier.
2. The Double Agent--one that is serving two opposing sides and wants the better of two worlds. Judas was a double agent because he supped with the Lord and yet betrayed him for 30 pieces of silver. Problem: God would rather we be hot or cold--real or fake--thereby being in a position to be corrected.
3. The Sold-Out Agent--one that is sincere in their faith-walk and wanting God to get the best out of their life. The Sold-Out agent can receive the "Words of Reconciliation" found throughout the bible--for once we receive vertical reconciliation (spiritual), we can receive reconciliation horizontally (on natural things).
